NC Blanket of Protection
Hello to all you patch collectors out there. I am working on a project to Benefit the NC Fallen Firefighters Fund. It is a Blanket made of nomex 16 ft by 16 ft. I am trying to place 1 patch from every fire department in North Carolina on the blanket. The blanket is then going to be raffled at the NC Firemen's Association Convention in Greensboro, NC August 25-27th. Tickets are $ 2.00 a piece and we are selling 5,000 tickets. This should bring in a total contribution of $10,000. to the North Carolina Fallen Firefighters Fund for help with the construction of a memorial to honor our states fallen Brothers and Sisters. If any of you other collectors happen to have duplicate NC patches that you would be willing to donate to add to this project it would be greatly appreciated. Mind you I don't have patches to trade in return. I have attached a few pictures of the Blanket for you to view. In the pictures the blanket is folded in half and still under construction. I am going to start attaching the patches to the blanket in June. So if you have any that you are willing to donate please have them to me by the end of June 2005. | 7 Aug 06 | Dear Fire Department: My Name is Tyson Jones I am Volunteer firefighter for the City of Osage City Kansas. I am currently staying the the Ronald McDonald’s house in Topeka Kansas. My son is in the NICU he was born on May 26, 2006 and originally his due date was on August 26, 2006 so he was exactly three months early. It’s been very stressful time while he’s been the NICU his health has been going up and down. He started off at birth 1 pound 12 ounces and now he us up to 4 pounds 5 ounces so he is gaining weight like he supposed to but his lungs or not fully developed like they should so he has been off and on with the ventilator and c-pap so we are going to be here at the Ronald McDonald’s house until at least the middle of September or after. So while I am up here I am starting a hobby and collecting fire patches so when my son gets older I can give them to him and say I collected these when he was in the hospital. So I am asking your department if you would donate a patch in honor of my son. By doing this would tell me that there is fellow brother’s in the fire service that is thinking and praying for my son. | ROLAND R LaFRANCE, SR | I am a veteran
USAF firefighter-EMT from the 1970's. I was stationed at Loring AFB ME for
4 years and went TDY to Andersen AFB, Guam in 1973 during the "Bulletshot"
movement of personnel. I did go into the reserves for about a year after
active duty at Westover AFB MA. Then I worked as a career firefighter in my home
town of the City of Nashua, NH FD after leaving the Air Force. Later, I
was also a volunteer firefighter in northern NY State. While a fire
lieutenant and dept chaplain, I was injured in a house fire in 1993, and nine
operations later, I have been classified as totally disabled. I have metal
holding my neck together, bilateral hip replacements, a titanium filter in my
inferior vena cava, and a morphine pump implanted. Talk about problems
with metal detectors! Actually, it isn't usually too bad. The only thing
the metal detectors usually pick up on is the metal holding my broken neck
together. I collect almost anything to do with firefighting, as I am from a firefighting family. I am looking for the full-color USAF FIRE PROTECTION patch. I do have a couple of the camo ones. I do not have a lot of patches to trade with, but I do have a few doubles of some I've received from a very good firefighter friend in Missouri. I will pay if I can get a couple of the full-color USAF FIRE PROTECTION patches. I also enjoy hearing from other firefighters, and hearing their stories. I welcome your emails.
