NEW IDEA

With 635 votes cast the survey is closed.  Here is the summary:

Due to the high level of interest in the idea to change the AF badge, I have decided to solicit your opinions regarding the badges by AF and DoD Fire Fighters.  Here are some of my thoughts and ideas.  Please vote on each one:

1.  The DoD title for fire protection is "Fire & Emergency Services."  Many DoD fire departments now call themselves "Fire & Emergency Services" and I think the trend will continue.  I believe all fire organizations in the Department of Defense should be called Fire & Emergency Services, including the Air Force:

The vote was overwhelming that every DoD fire protection organization should be called Fire & Emergency Services.  517 to 116

2.  The Air Force uses four levels of insignia in their fire badges and patches.  As far as I know, the AF is the only service that has adopted a badge.  Consequently, I propose that the existing AF badge be used as the model for all DoD fire badges.

440 to 192 agreed that the AF badge should be used as a model.

3.  Badges should be available for the following levels:  Fire Fighter, Driver/Engineer, Crew Chief/Lead Fire Fighter/Captain, Station Chief/Battalion Chief, Assistant Chief, Deputy Chief, Fire Chief, Upper level staff positions, Command Fire Chief, and Component Fire Chief (USAF, USN, USA, USMC, etc).

518 to 113 agreed that additional levels are needed.  I didn't allow suggestions so I may have missed a few levels that people wanted.

4.  In the fire service, the wearing of gold is a high honor reserved for those that have achieved the benefit of training and experience.  I believe the use of any gold should be limited to:

a.  Persons that hold fire officer certification, and
b.  Persons filling fire officer duty positions

559 to 71 voters agreed that the wearing of gold should be limited to those that meet the criteria above.

5.  There are persons that fill what is normally a fire officer duty position, or those that have "fire" in their title but who are not certified as a fire officer.  I believe these individuals should be allowed to wear the same level of badge but without the gold color.  For example, fire chiefs will wear the badge on the left, fire marshals (are not certified fire officers) will wear the badge on the right:

512 to 118 agreed on this method to distinguish qualified fire officers from those that hold traditional fire officer positions but do not possess the profession qualifications for fire officer.

6.  If you voted "agree" in 1 above,  which style of badge do you prefer?
